〈 CHARACTER INFO 〉

CHARACTER NAME: Hearthstone

CHARACTER AGE: > 18; ~20-30

SERIES: Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard: the Sword of Summer

CHRONOLOGY: Chapter 60 from "The Sword of Summer", just before leaving for Lyngvi to face Fenris Wolf

CLASS: Hero

HOUSING: Requesting individual housing - De Chima

BACKGROUND: Here!

PERSONALITY:

The rune "Perthro", with which Hearth is associated, represents the empty cup. It is said that in order to use rune magic, one must become an empty cup themselves; that is to say, they must undergo great suffering, so much so that it hollows them out and allows magic to fill the space left behind. Hearth's suffering comes from parental abuse. Hearth's parents resented their child for being deaf. When Hearth's brother passed away at a young age, his parents even went so far as to say that Hearth should have died in his place. In his childhood, he was treated more like a slave than a child, made to do chores in order for gold.

Due to all of this, Hearth exhibits many of the same qualities as any abuse victim. He is hesitant to confide in others about his feelings as they were so often dismissed growing up. That being said, when he is given the chance to confide in someone, he does so fully, spilling out the details of his past even to those that he does not know well - this is evidenced in canon by him sharing the details of his past with Samirah whom he has only known for a couple of days. Another symptom of his abuse, Hearth sometimes exhibits embarrassment when it comes to talking about things that he enjoys, such as magic or renaissance fairs. He is also not very confident in his magic ability until the end of the book and often puts himself down in that regard.

Magic is incredibly important to Hearthstone. He has been obsessed with using magic since he was only a child. As magic is no longer used by nearly anyone in his universe, he was ostracized by his parents and others for this obsession. This too is part of his reluctance to talk about such things.

Hearth is incredibly loyal. This is particularly evidenced by his relationship with Magnus Chase and Blitzen, though he shows loyalty to Samirah as well as the four go about their journey together. If needed, Hearth will readily sacrifice his own well-being in order to protect those that he cares about. He is also quick to encourage his friends when they are expressing insecurities or unhappiness.

Blitzen is of particular importance to Hearth. The two met when Blitzen saved Hearth's life by crafting a tanning bed for him, thereby allowing him to survive in the perpetually dark world of Nidavellir (elves need light in order to survive). Throughout the book, Hearth and Blitzen are more or less a team. When separated, Hearth will show some level of anxiety. When he sees Blitzen again after a long period of time or a particularly risky interaction, Hearth, despite usually remaining rather composed, will essentially tackle the other with affection due to the relief that he feels. Blitzen and Hearth are also very silly with each other, often getting into small spats or arguments, teasing each other, etc. Really, they tend to exhibit traits of a traditional married couple - fussing over each other's well-being, clothing choices, etc..

Hearth's relationship with Magnus is more parental. Hearth and Blitzen are both charged to watch over Magnus after his mother dies and Hearth takes this role very seriously. He will do anything to protect Magnus, even if doing so will put his own life in danger. He is concerned with supporting Magnus as well and being there for him emotionally (though he is not typically one to show his emotions readily). As well as being considered something of a "mom" to Magnus, Hearth also considers Magnus to be like a brother to him (seeing as he lost a brother of his own, this classification is extremely significant).

In general, Hearth is intuitive, quick-thinking, brave, and intelligent overall. He has an extremely dry, sassy, sarcastic, and sometimes self-deprecating sense of humor. He exhibits this sense of humor both when he is irritated or amused. He often likes to tease his friends (under both circumstances) and can be quite sassy to others. Though Hearth is relatively friendly, he can be quite prickly if he is feeling stressed out or annoyed. He also tends to be rather quiet even despite his muteness at times. When it comes to Gods or other powerful entities, Hearth tends to be respectful (except for when it comes to Thor - he can't stand that guy). Hearth also exhibits a strong sense of duty and loyalty and will, when given the choice or opportunity, do what he believes to be right and just.

POWER:
ASL Projection: ASL refers to both "Alfheim Sign Language" and "American Sign Language" (they just so happen to use the same signs). Being deaf, Hearthstone chiefly communicates using ASL. The ASL Projection power will allow his signs to be understood by anyone that he chooses to project the understanding to. However, this will not give any other ImPort the ability to sign back. Hearthstone can also choose not to project this communication if he wishes.

Rune Magic/Staff: In canon, Hearth is able to use rune magic, the most powerful magic available in his universe. He uses rune magic by casting spells using stones engraved with certain runes. He also possesses a staff which allows him to channel the rune "Perthro" (more on this below).

Endless Loop - Hearth will be able to temporarily alter reality and create a "hamster wheel" effect, causing those that he casts the spell on to run in an endless loop. This ability will only last up to five minutes, exhausting him more the longer he tries to maintain it. He will need several hours to recoup before being able to cast the spell again once it has been cast.

Unlocking Doors - This ability will allow Hearth to unlock simple, unenchanted locks (with permission given by the player that this will effect). Simple locks might include that to a typical house, apartment, store, etc. It works by using a rune as a replacement for a key and is not always successful.

Heather - This ability will allow Hearth to use his staff to strike the ground and make a magical flower (heather) grow. The heather will keep foes at bae and cause them to not want to approach the flowers as they will be stricken with pain the closer they get to them. This, I understand, will require permission from the players involved.

Sacrifice - This ability will allow Hearth to sacrifice his own strength in order to give that strength to someone else. This works in a similar way as healing does, though rather than being able to simply heal someone, Hearth will need to sacrifice all of his strength to heal their wounds. This power is only used in the most dire of circumstances and will drain Hearth of his ability to use all other forms of magic for a twenty-four hour period. Using it, however, can transfer enough strength to someone that it might heal fatal wounds or anything less severe than a fatal wound.

COMMUNITY POST (VOICE) SAMPLE:
Video

[Hearth appears on the network looking none-too-pleased - impatient if not a bit anxious. He's clad in his usual leather jacket and candy-striped scarf. He doesn't speak, but his hands do - he's signing into the camera, so quickly that it's probably a bit hard to understand even if you are familiar with ASL. If you aren't, though, don't worry. His new powers make it easy to understand, almost like you can hear a voice in your head talking for him.]

Looking for a dwarf. Well-dressed.

[He pauses for a minute, then balls up one fist and uses it to rub a bit at the corner of his eye - the universal symbol for "boo hoo".]

Possibly crying.

Need to find them. A-S-A-P. Urgent.

LOGS POST (PROSE) SAMPLE: An action thread from the TDM (see top-level for context).

FINAL NOTES: Hearth is an elf and therefore has a weakness when it comes to darkness. If he doesn't get enough sunlight he will become weak and begin to fade away.
